Introduction
- Teaching thermodynamics using simulations:
- virtual experiments promote understanding
- many examples in Java or JavaScript
- programming is hard work
- Using Modelica for standard cyclic processes:
- physical modeling simplifies task
- open source simulation program
- free model library for media
- but: thermo-fluid modeling is difficult!
- Available libraries:
- Fluid from Modelica Standard Library (MSL)
- thermo-fluid flow in pipes, vessels or machines
- very general approach → much too complicated here
- initialization difficult → models
recurrently fail to run
- ThermoSimT from textbook on Modeling & Simulation
- easily build models of standard processes
- does not use Media library from MSL
- DLR ThermoFluidStream Library (ThermoDLR):
- vessels and machines with support for Modelica
media library
- much easier to handle than MSL-Fluid
- uses physically motivated scheme for high
robustness
- → models generally run without
fine-tuning
